The Audacity of Hope

NYC Moody

Picture a Manhattan without a massive decade-long blight of vacant buildings, a city rendered unlivable years before 2020 – a cruel reminder that capitalism can be perverted. Or maybe we are looking now at its most logical endpoint: a graveyard of skyscrapers, lying fallow in the vain hopes that the proverbial portfolio will ultimately prove profitable. It is a huge game of chicken played out at a snail’s pace.
This calamity will take years to undo, and there will be required a massive economic meltdown of large institutions for that to happen, and a government willing to let them fail.
My odds: 50/50.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
– Hebrews 1:11
Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
– John 20:29
Those people in Manhattan? They are better than us. Because they want things they haven’t seen.
– Peggy Olson, Mad Men
