Over the past few weeks I’ve dived into art for the past 600 years. No, I’m not an expert but this is Facebook so here goes. What I am amazed is how much modern art is crap. Yes, there is Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Monet, etc etc stretching all the way to Van Gogh, Klimt, Dali, Miro and Picasso – but i noticed a paucity starting about WW1 (I would place it at Duchamp’s toilet in 1917) as art took a ridiculous turn, requiring brainwashing in art school to appreciate increasingly infantile art.
Just because uneducated folks think it’s bad doesn’t make it good. I would take Rockwell or Remington over any number of these talentless overpaid artistic elite any day. And Haring over Warhol any day. Still infantile though. Kids can make this art and for much cheaper. Art should be beautiful, – even a Goya demon eating a human head can be beautiful in its own way.
But this – this is different. With the Internet I am seeing a revolution aesthetics, where something has to be viscerally good on first showing, without art school, without some screwed up mindset. Something a priori beautiful. Not a Jeff Koons puppy, Warhol soup can, Pollack doodles, Formaldehyde shark or Golden Yolandi or a FREAKING BLACK SQUARE ON A CANVAS.
Some say we had to evolve our “artistic consciousness” and muddle through all those phases to get to here. I don’t buy it. That’s like saying you need shitty music to make the good music better. No. In any event, thank God those phases are done and we are at the point where Beauty is back and it’s all good stuff.
