What a difference 2 years has made.
Google went from Bard embarrassment to a viable leader. Unlike firebrands such as Grok and OpenAI, they’ve had to play it safe because of reputational risk if things go sideways. Pretty much everyone depends on Google in some form, whether it’s maps, email, business, and cloud, and if you start seeing hallucinations, how are you going to trust them with your personal data? So they took their time to get it right, and safe.
Its patience is paying off. For starters, Apple chose Gemini for its Siri AI. That is huge, especially on the front-end consumer side, but also didn’t overspend (if OpenAI misses one round of funding for its tech that college kids love to use to cheat, it’s toast)
Google has some eeny meany minor semblance of ethics (not saintly like Anthropic, just enough grift to weasel into the DOD (probably banking on the fact Trump has a very short shelf life going forward) but much MUCH cleaner than filthy Grok slop),
Google isn’t a Johnny Come Lamely to building servers like Oracle is (Oracle is as vulnerable to an AI bust as OpenAI is, hope those Ellison assholes end up on the street giving handies for beer money)
Google has integrated Gemini seamlessly while not making Microsoft’s mistake of making Co-Pilot a steaming pile of mediocre bloatware.
Google’s mostly off TrumpSchmegseth’s radar – for now, has just enough ecosystem where it helps without fear of lock-in, and has strength in its context scope while being a decent non-pigeonholed generalist.
And Meta. Zuck is gonna Zuck, still pulled down by his Metaverse fiasco. But at least it’s open source, which might give him legs.
It appears Google is the most deft at balancing all the spinning plates on pool cues. For now. Who knows, we may have a China lab leak of super viral dirt cheap AI!
