Paleoconservatism, the movement that explains Donald Trump, explained | Vox

It might be too early for a post mortem, but it just struck me out of the blue. Something so simple Chauncey the Gardener from Being There could explain.
GWB’s decision to invade Iraq, in retrospect, effectively killed the neocons. The legacy of Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and even William F. Buckley and the National Review has been pruned from the family tree.
Nature abhors a vaccuum. Everything old became new again. After an 8 year hibernation, a Pat Buchanan style pro-Brexit Paleoconservatism as championed by Trump is now the main trunk of the tree, with a dash of moderates, Evangelicals, and libertarians clinging on for dear life. Trump turning to Jesus will seal the deal and complete the circle.
I personally hope after he’s out and shamed forever it will be buried for good and libertarians be finally given a chance at the helm.
