I knew of Baba Yaga and her chicken-legged hut and all the Kiev legends but today I learned the vast majority of Slavs weren’t Christianized until the 15th-17th centuries – although they did have a chief God. It places them as the white people that are closest to paganism.
Slavs, it appears, have the oldest folk traditions alive today that go back in a direct line all the way to before the Indo Europeans 6,000 years ago! Which is really no mistake. Indo Europeans, which were the dominant culture from which almost all European languages came from (cept for, say, Basque and Etruscan), and all its fairy tales, geographically came from present day south Russia. Forget Greece. Russia is our European soul.
I predict that over time the Slavic Native Faith will eventually overtake Orthodox Christianity. It’s just closer to the soul fo the people. Populism will only accelerate this.
And now I know why that Russian guy back in the 90s was nicknamed “Leshy.” Adds a whole mystical dimension to my life in New York with hundreds of Russians and Ukrainians in the late 90s – early 2000s.
See, it’s never too late!
