meets DJ Edoardo,
Neurobiotic Records, Italy
June 2005
by Ari Davidov
EDOARDO is the main man behind Neurobiotic Records. He started DJing 10 years ago playing Techno at parties in Rome. After three years, he went to his first Trance party and decided to move in that direction, so, he started playing Psy-Trance, the first one in Rome.
Being one of the top DJ’s around today, he played gigs all over Europe (Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Denmark, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Serbia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Croatia, France, Russia, Holland, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria), Brazil, United States, Mexico, Argentina, India, and Japan.
From small parties to huge festivals like Samothraki Dance Festival, Voov Experience, Full Moon Festival, Shiva Moon, Solaris, Universo Paralello, he is constantly touring the world spreading the Neurobiotic virus.
His style is a mix of futuristic Psy-Trance with House, Progressive, and electronic breaks and beats. Giving great importance to the mixing, he creates a flowing liquid psychedelic soundscape. In 2004, he created Indica Music, Chillout/Downtempo label together with DJ JOSKO and he’s currently busy in the preparation of Sonica 2005, the first electronic music festival in Italy
Where are you right now Edoardo and what’s the vibe like?
I finally found some time to write this interview on a plane… I’m on a flight to Brazil, where I’m going to play this weekend. Vibe is kind of tense these days due to all the job we are doing for Sonica Festival.
So the SONICA festival must be keeping you and your crew quite busy these days…
Yes very much. Actually when we started thinking to make a festival in Italy we were not thinking to get such a big feedback and so many people coming… And all the e-mails we are getting and the quantity of the tickets going out every day are pushing us doing more and more for this festival… We really hope will be a wonderful experience for everybody.
Please give an update on the latest to those lucky enough to participate in SONICA.
What’s special for sure is that Sonica will be the first trance festival in Italy. Italy is a beautiful country and the location we have is just perfect for a trance party… And, in my opinion, the line up is one of the best ever seen in a festival, but obviously I’m not objective… 😀
It seems that psytrance has gotten big in Italy, but it wasn’t always so. How has this progressed from your perspective and can you give us some “up n’coming” artist names to watch out for coming out of Italy?
Well, I can’t say psytrance is getting big, let’s say it’s slowly getting popular… there have always been parties in Italy, though before it was really underground… Not many people and not good djs. Now the situation is different, but we can’t say yet that psytrance has gotten big in Italy. Beside Neurobiotic Records and few people making parties, there is not much happening. I really hope Sonica will be the beginning of trance in Italy. Some artists coming out from Italy, for sure Gaiatech, Cimi, M-Klone, I’m sure we’ll hear of them in the near future.
Turning to North America, our movement must seem quite “intimate” for Europeans… I imagine you see both pluses and minuses in that?
Well, I don’t know much about your scene. I played once in New York and that’s all my “American experience”. I had fun there but didn’t see the “trance spirit”… Obviously being a club in a big city I couldn’t probably expect much, but was surely good fun. I’m now looking forward to play at Gaian Mind, I have a feeling will be a nice party… Anyway a young scene is something really nice, there are few places in the world like Brazil where the scene started very good and is now sometimes spoiled being too commercial and not psychedelic at all, so I think u should take care of it and grow it in a nice way…
Gaian Mind Festival is a special event for many of us here, what are your expectations as you get ready to participate?
I’m sure to experience a nice festival with a different crowd compared of what I’m used to see during my gigs around the world… I’m really curious to get there and check this one out…
Do you do any studio work yourself, or does the label management, festival production and DJing keep you busy enough and satisfied?
I would need at least 35 hours a day to start producing music as well… At the moment, it is really impossible for me to have time to work in the studio… I made some tracks and I’m confident I can do some good stuff, but now I’m too busy with the festival and the label… Actually they are strongly connected, label is promoting the festival, Sonica is pushing the label, so I have to work on both. I’m not djing much at the moment, I refused lot of gigs in the last few months because of Sonica.
You’ve got Tikal coming out with a new album… What else’s new at Neurobiotic these days?
We just released a compilation called Groove Controllers, compiled by Altom, one of the best compilations on my label. Tikal album is going to be released during these days, and after it we have Sonica compilation, featuring artists who will play at the festival… Then will be time for Silicon Sound and Nick (aka Panick) new albums. I just signed a new very promising artist from Holland called Zen Mechanics, making some really nice stuff….
Is Indica records, your chill label, going strong now as well?
Indica is very young, but started on the right path in my opinion, we got very good feedback about our 2 releases, and we are now compiling the new compilation called Vajra. It’s a difficult market, but I think we r doing right.
What are your top five tracks to play right now?
Hard to say… let’s try:
1. Nick – Blind Sensations (Neurobiotic)
2. Wrecked Machines – Bandbox (Neurobiotic)
3. Black and White – Geronimo (Hommega)
4. Tikal – Tequila (Neurobiotic)
5. Pixel – Technology, spirit and mind (Neurobiotic)
Thanks Edoardo, we will see you soon!
Sure! Thank you… I have a feeling Gaian Mind will be a special party!
