Unpopular opinion: I unironically prefer Daft Punk when they are filtered through someone else, like Pentatonix:
Though I adore their sci-fi cyber aesthetic and have heard and seen them many many times in New York, I never really glommed on to their music. There is no song in their oeuvre that I care enough to save or hear again. I felt they were baby shoes/training wheels for casual listeners, the ones who liked disco but not italo disco. The outré details they extracted from the electronic ether were exactly the wrong ones. Their music is best seen as some sort of musical pastiche, a structure upon which other acts could build upon and make listenable, enjoyable music.
If you want French (so unfair to pull out a national identity here isn’t it) electronic music, with its style, funkiness, and playfulness, look no further than Miss Kitten and the Hacker, and Vitalic.
Note: We aren’t talking psytrance here! That’s a whole other can of glow worms!
