meets Tegma
February 2005
by Vitalik
Omar Chelly and Jason Orfanidis of Sweden have been producing trance music since 1998. The TEGMA project was born in 2000 as a fusion of their psychedelic roots and the new wave of dark tribalistic progressive trance. Their first album “Encoded/Decoded” was released in 2002 to much acclaim.
TEGMA’s music is best described as having “a dark and simple sense of melody inserted skillfully into the driving psychedelic backbone, with a slight feel of progressive house on the rhythmic end.”
I’m here in the chat mode with Omar from Tegma with a few questions to get NYC crowd acquainted with what kind of taste Omni Tribe is bringing to the party on Friday Feb 18 at club The HOOK. Omar, we are all very excited to welcome Tegma here in USA. Can you tell a bit about the tour?
We are doing a North American Tour to promote the release of our second album “002:Avant.Garde” which will be out ny the end of February. We are playing in the following cities: Cancun, Montreal, New York and Toronto. Worth to mention also that this is the first time we will be playing in USA and Canada.
It is your second album and this time you release on a different record label. Is it a step towards something new? Are you still friends with Digital Structures?
Yes this album is quite different in sound and texture. We wanted to do an album that both people from full on and progpsy crowds could enjoy. And yes we are still friends with DS, we just wanted to try out another alternative…
Many people are skeptical about electronic bands playing live. I know your set is very live and sometimes compared with Son Kite live set in its style. How much of improvisation are we going to get?
AS much as possible, our new live set can be adapted to crowds needs, if we see that the crowd needs some harder stuff we raise the bpm, the choice of tracks is quite flexible with the setup we have now.
When you play in front of the crowd the connection between you and music. How does it work in your heads?
It depends on the feedback u get from your music; we always try to give 100% when we play. When there is positive feedback on the dancefloor we push ourselves to our extremes. For sure playing and performing is the thing that makes us going and continue to do what we love to do. Nothing beats playing live…
What does it take to make the sound original? Do you have a situation when you catch yourself that you’ve heard it somewhere else?
Let me see.
To make something original, one has to avoid listening too much to the same genre of music that you want to produce. Therefore it’s good to be open-minded and to listen to other types of music, for ex we listen to electronica, chill, reggae , world music.
And u also have to find your own sound, this takes a lot of work of course.
Sure
but the key to sounding original is not to repeat yourself over and over. As an artist u should try to evolve and touch new grounds..
Does it have any connection with you evolution as a person? What other directions you go except music? Poetry J maybe?
Of course as a person evolves so do his creations. Well for us our best way to express ourselves is by making music, but who knows what will happen in the future?
Do you believe in anything?
We believe in making the dancefloor move!
How old are you and Jason?
im 26 and jason 24
Music and you is it forever? Is it something addictive?
Definitely we will be around music as long as possible, as long as we have our ears left. We will maybe not produce trance for the rest of our lives, but I’m sure we will never stop making music.
We are addicted to both listening to music and making our own music
it’s very uplifting to take interviews! Are you being interviewed a lot? And how is it going with popularity? Does it make your head spin?
It’s certainly nice to be interviewed as well. We are being interviewed mostly after an album release and sometimes before or after parties. Well, can’t really say that we are famous. But whenever we see somebody appreciating our music it’s a great feeling.
I want to ask something light and fluffy, but can’t come up with the right question.
how about this: DO u have a message for the people coming to the party the 18th?
so do you?
no
Haha
yes we have
We hope to see u all there with a smile on your face, and that u will like our new music.
We have been looking forward to play in USA for a long time now!!
America is at your feet.
