People tracking their descent into paranoia are already concerned about what could go wrong.
This is actually not surprising and is a recurring theme throughout human history. Going beyond the obvious Jim Jones/David Koresh comparison, an argument could be made for the Pilgrims coming to Plymouth Rock following this path.
