My Least Favorite Overrated Bands

Emek x Iggy Pop

Rolling Stone Magazine

Decrepit old hippies enforcing their dated tastes through “best of” lists finally came to an end with the Internet.

Iggy Pop

The Good:
Admittedly, his first three albums, which is a helluva lot more than Joy Division could claim.

The Bad:
Most of what came after the early 70s
Endless wasted years on bad songs and heroin addiction

Joy Division

This video is a perfect storm of hyperbole. I very much like Joy Division but I think they, like Henry Rollins, are a tad overrated. I don’t know how much of it was because I was on strong acid at the time of binge listening to it, but the first album was basically made timeless because of the genius of Martin Hannett (remember when Jello Biafra made fun of Hannet? Who here still pulls out any of those well-produced Dead Kennedies tracks!?!)
The followup was inarguably inferior, and the band’s legacy was cemented with a suicide. Who knows if they would have overcome their sophomore slump, or just been one hit wonders? Who knows how much of a boost the suicide gave New Order?
Early New Order was masterful, beating most of what Joy Division had done. Then the inevitable? 5 year slide.
We never got to see Ian cashing in with vapid late New Order.
And that is a good thing.
This is all OK. Sigue Sigue Sputnik had a few food songs too. Thousands of bands have. I just don’t buy putting them on a special pedestal. There were tons of “seminal” songs from one hit wonders.
Now take a band like U2, who have put out killer album after killer album far far longer than any other band would have faded.
Other examples of longevity would be Depeche Mode. REM. Rush up to Vital Signs. Police all the way through. Clash. Abba. Fleetwood Mac. The list is quite short. It’s similar to TV series, some don’t know when to quit. Others can pound out years of greatness. But music is easier to keep going.

Lou Reed, Velvet Underground & Andy Warhol

The Good: A few tracks from their first couple albums.

Were these songs groundbreaking? Absolutely not. They just stick out from the other music around this time for not making me want to kill animals.
The Bad: Pretty much everything else from the very beginning to the last gasp
The Velvet Underground celebrated depravity with poorly penned songs. Their capstone overrated album, Vevet Underground & Nico, (AKA the One with the Banana) has a grand total of zero good songs. It is trash with woefully begotten cringey “songs.”
Andy Warhol was a hack that never made anything artistically enduring.
“You’re a killer of art, you’re a killer of beauty, and you’re even a killer of laughter,” Willem de Kooning shouted at Andy Warhol, across a party, just months after the 1968 assassination attempt that placed Warhol in a painful corset for the rest of his life and secured, by the perverse logic of the era, his status as a giant of the 1960s.”

Lou Reed solo never wrote anything of value. Bob Dylan without the talent and worse addictions.

Roger Waters

I liked most of Pink Floyd’s albums.
Before Waters, Piper at the Gates of Dawn was great but i can’t tell if it was the acid or not. Some of it was certainly cringey.
Umma Gumma, Meddle, and Dark Side of the Moon was good.
They must have switched drugs, or something in the mid 70s. Didn’t like Animals or Wish You Were Here. It got overwrought and musically vacuous.
The Final Cut – a masterpiece.
The Wall – Oh boy.

I loved the Wall. I listened to it countless times. I remember watching the Wall as a kid and I sympathized with him growing up without a father, and how alienating it was to be a rock star.
Then I learned the history of WW2, and how much rock stars made.
Then I learned how Waters has told Jew jokes for 20 years.

Roger Waters Concert Pig

Fuck that guy. BDS has failed and will never go anywhere. The only people who defend him are the white bourgeois Western hard Left.
I will still listen to him and Morrissey, but I look at him like I look at a couple former friends who went down the alt right rabbit hole.

July 18, 2022:
Roger Waters Says He’s “Far, Far, Far More Important” Than The Weeknd and Drake
OK Boomer.
I hate them all for different reasons – I hate the self-important git that Waters has become – he’s pretty much the Rudy Giuliani of rock – but I also categorically despise what hip hop has become. I ended up slightly on the side of the 2 black dudes.
Such is the power of wanting to see pompous men go down.
Boy. I can really tell in moments like this that I am fully out of my angsty teenage Roger Waters phase.
This has played out before, when Waters attacked Israel, while at the same time Israel named a street after Trump. Hmmmmmm decisions decisions. I cut the Gordian knot on that one and bade them both to hell.
Conspiracy me notes Drake is Jewish and goes hmmmm and saves that minutia for later perusual.

Tool

All of their music is complete shit. They are notable only for their association with Alex Grey and being among the first to popularize Ketamine use.
