Anyone who understands human nature, history, and technology knows “The Wall” won’t do diddly to stop illegal immigration. All they need is ladders, tunnels, or simply walk around or through them LOL. So any compromises Trump makes with DACA or other areas will only help squeeze out nice things for illegal immigrants.
Either way, all good news for illegal immigrants. They can only gain.
Which isn’t fixing the “problem.”
I personally don’t think there’s a problem at all. The numbers just don’t bear this out. This is just a crisis created by Trump in 2016 to stir his base.
Let’s do a thought exercise, however. Wanna make this problem go away? You know, fix the ROOT of the problem, not all its myriad symptoms?
I will be blunt. Legalize all drugs. This will put a stake thru the heart of the gangs. Put any of the billions set aside for all this wall DACA crap to rehabilitation/drug treatment. This will also create a windfall from a much lower prison population and less strained justice system. Yes, there will be other costs and downsides as well, but I suspect it will be around what Colorado is experiencing right now with its Reefer Problem, i.e. little to none. Treat drug addiction as a mental illness.
Also, throw the remainder into a Marshall Plan for Central America. Greatly expand trade and law enforcement ties thoughout the region. Make the rest of Central America look like Costa Rica.
NAFTA is a great example of how shared prosperity reduces illegal immigration.
The problem will go away very quickly. An ounce of prevention is a pound of cure. Why would anyone want to move out of their homes, leaving behind family, jobs and safety? Very few.
Of course, America won’t go for this ACTUAL solution, so we will continue to waste billions tilting at windmills.
