He had it all. Swedish good looks, fame, fortune. Reminds me all too much of friends I have had – young, smart talented people that are gone forever. Could easily have been me in my youth.
This is probably garden variety alcoholism. You can die within a month just from daily heavy drinking. Avicii was losing his organs one by one over the past few years. This was a long time coming.
If you inject yourself into the entertainment industry you are at huge risk of succumbing to its nonstop doses of temptations. Everyone wants to hook up the rock star DJ. You can easily become like a puppy running around a picnic surrounded by free goodies. Travelling makes it worse. Without a solid home and real, steady relationships self-medicating becomes a lot easier.
This isn’t new. It’s the 70s rock star updated to the 21st century. Higher tech drugs and social media, but the dynamics are the same.
Normal people can fly too close to the flame, too. You may do drugs or alcohol, that’s your business not mine. Keep in mind, though, even if you think you are in control, and keep exploring what’s available, eventually, you could find something (or someone!!) so amazing that you will not be able to stop. There is probably a vice out there right now with your name on it that you have never even heard of that is so perfectly geared to satisfying your psychological and neurochemical needs that it would ultimately consume you if you tried it just once. That should be a sobering thought.
To this day I miss my party days. But I am an all or nothing person. I don’t just dabble in things, I go whole hog. Become the expert. So I had to turn away and choose life.
It goes without saying, if you are ever hospitalized because of substances (Avicii was in for pancreatitis), you should never ever do them again, and no halfway, or you will probably die. Keeping a death wish demon on your left shoulder is just not fair to your family and everyone else who has to pick up the pieces of your shattered life.
