In the Joseph Campbell group I just found an interesting
observation of East vs West churches, and how they correspond to views on authoritarianism:
“After visiting several monasteries & churches and spending time with the iconography, I was really taken with the difference between the Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant relationship with Jesus. In the East, Jesus is the Judge & King of Heaven. In the West, Jesus is the blood sacrifice. It’s almost an authority thing, Catholic Churches and, subsequently Protestant churches, must protect and defend Jesus, whereas Eastern churches are operating at the forbearance of Jesus…. there’s a definite distinction in the symbolism and I think that bears out in the interpretation of scripture and the behavior of the adherents.”
