Like Shakespeare, and to a lesser extent Hans Christian Anderson and Joseph Campbell, Tolkien was a great writer who could put all the lightning of the ancient European folklore and fairy stories into a bottle for us to cherish. That gift, to give us back what our ancestors gifted each other, came full circle, the resonance of which we will feel forever.
