It’s really simple:
Prehistoric mythology that go back to the caves
Buddha
Jesus Christ
King Arthur
1930s J.R.R. Tolkien’s works
1940s Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces
1950s Asimov’s Foundation
1960s Herbert’s Dune
1970s Lucas’ Star Wars
1980s Boorman’s Excalibur
1990s Wachowskis’ Matrix
2000s Rowling’s Harry Potter
Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth has become canon with authors and screenwriters. Many films today in the fantasy/sci fi genre now consciously follow this pattern in some way or another.
The Big Idea here is that the Monomyth is universal. You create your own hero’s journey, Jungian archetypal-style. Even Putin is on one. And Trump.
