Cancel culture is an unfortunate trend that is unfortunately becoming more and more prevalent in our society. I think that it is important to remember that we are all individuals, and that everyone should be allowed to express their opinions and beliefs without fear of ostracization or cancellation. We should be striving to create a culture of understanding and respect, not one of censorship and punitive actions.

In Defense of J.K. Rowling | New York Times

Get off my lawn

I’ve never read her books – I was way too busy having fun to read children’s lit when I was in my 30s. But I watched her being harassed by the religious right for all the witchcraft in her books. Being a D&D playing Gen Xer who lived through the Satanic Panic in the 80s,

and being a direct descendant of Susannah Martin, who was hanged in Salem, I groaned, and chuckled, knowing that all the publicity simply helped drive her book sales.

Which brings us to today.

Some on the far left are attacking J.K. Rowling for a series of tweets about transgenders:

‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud? Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate

If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.

The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women – ie, to male violence – ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences – is a nonsense.

I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.

“I’ve never felt as shouted down, ignored, and targeted as a lesbian *within* our supposed GLBT community as I have over the past couple of years.”

Yes, that’s right. People are ANGRY at these tweets!

So angry, in fact, they are also attacking a game that has come out based on her Harry Potter franchise. They even made a website to track anyone who dares to stream this “Nazi transphobic filth.”

These people are the mirror image of the Christians who burned her books. Killed my ancestor.

Maybe it’s the youthful inexperience of Millenials and Gen Z, but I simply cannot fathom how anyone can overreach so profoundly and blindly when attacking J.K. Rowling for apparent transphobia, and ignore history that has shown us time and time again the Streisand Effect, in which any boycott of any media property is 100% going to help sell that property. We are seeing this now with Hogwart’s Legacy, which is now the #1, 2, 3, and 4 streamed game on Twitch:

Like Putin in Ukraine, the “Cancel J.K. Rowling Gang” has lost in the most humiliating way possible – publicly, making themselves look fucking stupid, and simultaneously helping their “enemy.”

In conclusion, every last clickbait article (such as this one) feigning outrage helps to “build awareness” of that property. If you want to combat transphobia, choose better battles, find better targets, stop spreading lies, stop straw manning people, and most importantly stop harassing feminists.

There are enemies somewhere, probably white CIS males like me, that is laughing so hard at trans people fighting with feminists over tiny pieces of the pie.

Go after them.
