The Unintended Consequences of Government Funded Religious Schools (Editorial)

Updated 2 years ago

Conservatives fear government-driven unintended consequences and societal restructuring.
This is the mother lode of government-driven unintended consequences and societal restructuring.
They won’t all be good Christian schools, you know. Don’t blithely assume your lilly whitebread Baptist church is the only game in town. Do you really understand the implications of opening this Pandora’s Box?
Are you prepared to allow your tax dollars pay for schools run by Scientologists, White Aryan Odinists, Manson Family, the whole-village-drinks-psychedelic-tea Santo Daime, Mormons, Voodoo Witch Doctors, Branch Davidians, Wiccans, New Agers, Papal Pedophiles, Pastafarians, Rastafarians, the “White People are Devils” Black Hebrew Israelists, Yoga Molesters, black power Nation of Islam, or a Wahabist madrasa? Maybe even an Atheist “church.”
I could go on. And people will aggressively grow fringe religions to follow the tax dollar. Nature abhors a money vaccuum.
Don’t you think innocent children have a right to grow up without being brainwashed?
Come on people, give the Founding Fathers the benefit of the doubt. I guess the next four years we will see just how bad all the bad ideas really are. The Middle East tried this with madrasas and produced generations of government sponsored religious fanatic terrorists. History has proven time and time again that religious extremism breeds terrorism, and here we are, home brewing it.
If this goes through, buckle your seats, because our society is about to get fundamentally restructured generations to come in ways radical leftists could only dream of. I can only hope we regain a new appreciation of our institutions that some have unwisely chosen to try to destroy.
In my early years as a libertarian journalist I wrote about school choice as a viable solution to education’s problems. But in the years since I have witnessed friends telling me about the horrors of unregulated charter school scams. Regulated charter schools free of religious influence may yet be a workable solution. Time will tell. But we have a lot to lose. If you burn it all down, we are back to the caves, and our children pay the price.
