ELECTRYPNOSE will be playing at the Gaian Mind Summer Festival 2006

Hello Vince…
Hi everyone and people from Gaian Mind I don’t know yet.

How are things going after the release of the “Le Tireur de Ficelles” album? What kind of feedback are you getting?
I’m very happy how it goes I must say. First feedbacks are very good and it seems to fill mostly what people expected about this album. Of course, there are some people for example who expected a more melodic way or they thought ear something different regarding the preview releases. Or another critic I got is that the flow is changing and breaking too much. I can understand but it’s all about tastes, and it’s normal that it works for some people and not for some others.

At what point in your life did you catch the psytrance virus?
It was in ’99, my sister introduced me in a private party in the Switzerland forest organized by Psyberpunk. I haven’t caught the philosophy of the movement directly at that party, but the atmosphere and the music caught well my attention. Then I continued to go to parties (mostly little and friendly ones) and little by little I constructed my meaning about all of this.

In what ways did all the exposure you’ve had to classical music shape your approach to production and performance?
I’m sure it’s a very strong background of all I’m doing now. It’s the best help I got to learn musical rules. Nothing really about what music creates on our feelings, but all technical specifications we should use to create the music “right.” For performance, it was not really helpful because I never learned piano, so when I’m in a front of a MIDI keyboard I couldn’t play like a pianist… I know some chords and can play some melodic stories, but it doesn’t go farther. It’s a good point to be a musician when you produce electronic music, but there is also a big part which is more electronic and informative understanding as music itself.

What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in the studio lately?
I sold some material I wasn’t really using more 😛 hehe. I could say else in one way I love to explore is mixing breakcore style with chillout or trance. Using lot of different sounds responding to each others. It’s very interesting because the autor don’t know what will come out. Breakcore / experimental sound is also something I like very much to try, faster bpm with many substances assembled together. More musical and melodic stuffs are also a good part of my researches, because I find that melodies/harmonies are one of the greatest thing to give all feelings.

In your production, have you stopped using hardware entirely or use a soft/hard combination?
I use a combination of hardware and software. I would not really stop to use hardware material, I don’t know, it has a richness that virtual instruments don’t have. Even if it’s supposed to be very similar. But what I use in hardware are just synthesizers, I don’t use any hardware sequencer or other tools like processors.

For you personally, what is so special about the trance culture? Is there anything you would want to see more of?
I often compare the actual trance culture with the hippies in the 70s. I discovered it in that way and I like all that’s around it. It’s one of the scenes in electronic music where there are the most innovative things. I just wish to see more respecting people at parties, less junkies, and of course, always surprising music.

Tell us some details about your upcoming chillout/breaks album.
The title is “Subliminal Melancholies” it’s based mostly on melodic stories. Some tracks got slow breakcore touch. Its difficult to speak about chill out, because I don’t feel it really comparable with any chill out I use to listen to. It’s mostly not really atmospheric music, for example, I don’t feel very comfortable when this music is on the CD player and I’m with friends having a discussion. I have to be concentrated on music, stay alone, and listen to it. The CD has a quite wide range of moods and is pretty personal.

How are your side projects going? Are you releasing some tracks?
I’m very glad with it. Since I’m producing, it was a long period of work I was alone to make music. For 1-2 years I had the chance to work with some very nice people. Actually, I have several tracks with local unknown projects with my friends, and some with more know names. Almost all is gonna be released somewhere. The last are for example with Kindzadza, Highko, Energy Loop, and Chromatone for the knows. And Elendil, Karash, Melodix, DocD, Bombax, and Airi for the friend’s connections.

Are you preparing for a busy summer traveling to gigs?
It’s gonna be pretty full yeah. I’m writing you these lines from Portugal, then I move to Austria, to Finland, to USA to visit you and Geomagnetic crew in California. Then Slovakia, Sweden, Denmark, Brazil are also in the program. I just hope to be able to have some free periods to create music. 😛

What have you heard about psytrance in America? Any expectations for Gaian Mind?
I heard mostly about SF scene and a little club in New York City. Otherwise, I have some friendly contacts dispatched here and there in the USA, but I don’t know so much how it goes around there I must say. I think Gaian Mind might be one of the biggest events I will play in, so I for sure expect a good adventure! 🙂
