You must read Kelly Cole’s blog. I know a great writer when I see one, and in the Venn diagram of “also lived the NYC club life,” the overlap is exceedingly thin, populated by a precious few others, such as Steve Lewis.
These are all priceless. Kelly is a talented writer with gripping stories to tell about a world long gone. Sadly, kellycole.com, which was his entire store URL, went down last year, and is still down, and with it, in the About section, his blog about New York in the late 80s and early 90s.
Considering the circumstances, I don’t believe he was specifically trying to hide the blog part, which was a tiny part of his site – if that were the case, he would have simply removed the blog from the “About” part. So I feel OK with spreading the good word.
Here are the links from Internet Archive for his blog. Classic old New York stories. Don’t be scared off by the 1st one, his origin story, which starts a bit slow. There is a blank popup on each page, just escape out of it. Beware, the links on the side are random aren’t sequential, so clicking the links below is the best way to read them in order.
Maybe someday this can be scraped and saved, so all of it can be read without clicking 10 times. Parts of it are that good. As I don’t want to step on his toes, I’ll give it a few years.
