It’s not what you think. The photo above for the promo is misleading. There are no crazy special effect visuals on your phone screen. All the action happens behind your closed eyelids, somewhere between your optic nerve and your brain. And as has been proven that audiobooks and D&D sessions evoke more imaginative imagery than film, no technology will ever match the human brain.
In the late 90s, I had a set of ten light/sound glasses with audio – the “Brain Machines.” The white LED light was cutting edge back then. It fit all in a huge duffel bag that I would cart out to events with lawn chairs and charge a few bucks. I even had a website about them. I had a meeting with Virgin to get them on their planes, but the epileptic risk stopped that in its tracks.I stopped the whole enterprise after a friend, who was not epileptic, Russian Val, had a seizure and was taken to the hospital. My West Coast counterpart, Aaron Cohick, suffered the same fate in a California desert rave, but unfortunately his patient zero had a lawyer mom.
…well, this app does the same thing, using your phone’s flash.
This app uses your phones’ flashlight to strobe at different frequencies, and you view it with eyes closed. You will start to see kaleidoscopic patterns. Also provides sound, and is guided by a narrator.
Check it out! Works surprisingly well. It’s pretty low-tech, although the science behind it is sound.
