NYC604, the first month (September 2002)

The entire archives are a huge file, ~800,000 lines long over 9 years. I thought it might be interesting to post a new month every so often as an experiment. The page may take a while to load.

NYC604 was a public discussion group for public trance parties in New York with ~620 members, started in 2002, cutting off at 2010. Yahoogroups shut down on December 15, 2020.. Luckily I saved them all with a Python app right before it died.

Email at machinelf at tranceam.org if you have any questions. – This is mostly plain text about events. And comments. And all that. No photos are included.

In case you didn’t know this already, the brainmachines and TripoutNY lists were archived as well, accessible via the Trance menu item above. The main portal page for all Yahoogroups can be accessed here, as well as complete, huge raw text files of NYC604 and DMT.

How privacy was maintained

NYC604 was a public discussion list, so I’m not terribly concerned with hiding anything. But some remedial steps were taken anyway.

Emails were changed from “@” to “at” and the suffix com/edu/net was purged, and a well as most major email domains such AOL, Hotmail, and MSN. – All text is kept but illegal references were acronymmed, ads were removed as much as possible, and server strings and messages were purged – All messages were kept unless they were a big block of alphanumeric, which means someone felt it was cool to send an image directly rather than link. – One email type area that was difficult to obfuscate was .edu’s – for example after all the purging, your email and school is still there, for example “TMcMillan Columbia” That will have to be done on a school by school basis. – Even with all these safeguards, some personal details may come through in ways you are not comfortable with. Contact me if so. Finally, contact me if you find a name that slipped through. Um, besides Jason’s.

What a party it was. In everything that Phantasm was wrong, these guys did
it right.
Simply amazing location. In a real forest, removed from any signs of
civilization.
The people who owned the place were absolutely magical. They are like a one
big community of hippies. The people who organized the party knew exactly
how psychedelic outdoor should be organized.
Great music, great vibe, great party. Free tea, coffe, showers, fantastic
chill out ( it was almost like a chill out city). On a main dance floor the
music started out at about 11 p.m. (on Sat.) and was pumping untill 10 a.m.
next day. Mad props to Philadelphia scene and everyone else who came there.
If anything made up for Phantasm faults it was Gaian Mind. At the end the
guy who supposedly was in charge of the place (check it out, he is a monk),
came on a main dance floor to thank us all for coming, mentioning that we
were really great in a way that we behaved toward the location and the
people, and invited our jolly bunch back next year. Then we all held hands in
one big circle and thanked the Land for having us.
It was by far the best party I have ever attended.

I wasn’t able to go to the Gaian Mind Festival wh ich
bummed me out but I’ll live.

However, I was able to go to see Infected Mushroom
at Shelter on Friday and it was so unbearably hot on the

Not th e headspace I was “expecting” that’s for
sure.

Looking forward to Omni Tri be’s Aural Beats
party in September where they say they’re

There was a recent VH1 special called “Addicted to Club Drugs”
It showed Jesse, AKA Tweak, who was NiMf006 on a watchdog list for
rave thugs. He is no longer a member.

He was the little rave kid who had his ass beaten by BTS guys because
he was an E dealer, and we let him vent and complain. And give info on
various local area thugs. He was friends with that Bunny woman.
He unsubbed some time back.

He was a raver kid. The low life kind of e dealer that poulates
raves and smokes angel dust. He maybe came to 2 or 3 trance events
in his life.

VH1 told Synthetic that they heard that SS was the most highly
regarded trance group in NYC. So they came and filmed at a recent SS
party. Tweak was part of the film crew, I saw him and said hey
Tweak, congrats you got a job! He smiled and said, yeahh…! Then
they followed Tweak around, showed him doing K in front of a
Synthetic Sadhus banner. Then they showed him going through rehab.

Judas. He could bring down the whole trance scene.

This list is the second that I’m “outing” him on, if anyone here has
anything more to add to this email, do it, and then it will go out on
brainmachines and safetydance.

I have been associated with raves in the past. I will tell you this I met
that tweak kid at one of the Countdown parties in Staten Island.

We came over on the Ferry together he was nodding off cuz he took some
H before waiting for the ferry. So here was some drugged out raver
trying to eat pizza that he bought at the SI Ferry at 1am and me. I was
hauling 2,000 Paul Oakenfold sampler cassettes and a box of Lotus magazines.
We boarded the ferry he disappeared. When it came time to get off the ferry
he helped me carry the magazines down the stairs to the train, and from the
train to the venue, I was amazed the kid could stand let alone carry
somthing -but hey at least I gave him somthing to read.

The party was filled with kids on drugs. They came from Staten Island,
Connecticut and all the places I normally wouldn’t be caught dead. It
sucked. It sucked. It sucked.

Tweak and I reunited later outside. I was promoting inside for sometime but
the music drove me crazy, I think it was The Dever, preferring the fresh air
(or whatever they call it in SI) to the dip induced nightmare inside… I
even saw one young man burn his eyebrows off after lighting a fresh dip.

So Tweak comes up to me and begins to tell me about how the BTS robbed him
and beat him up, and now he has only a little bit of weed left and he knows
this girl inside who will hook him up but he’s afraid .yada yada yada then
out come the BTS.

This kid was standing behind me, using me as a shield as he cowered. BTS
they always leave me alone, I always figure there like bounces that way if
your there to work your not a problem… besides I wouldn’t go down without
a wicked fight.

They harassed him for a while then went to the parking lot to break into
someone’s car or somthing. When they left I asked him why he came to raves
if he was always going to end up beaten up or afraid to listen to the music
he replied

“it’s a good time”

There was a time when Rave and Underground were united, now it’s an excuse
for 2bit promoters and shady dealers to get we in some ignorant 16 year old.
Despite all this I will still be going to Boo.

people.. do it at home… or don’t go to massives like the SS
partys.. SS
isn’t a trance party.. it’s a RAVE… the israli trance party on
the 9th was
a trance-dance-party… BTS dosn’t go to small gatherings…
you’ll never
see them at opium den… you must keep in mind the difference
between
“PUBLIC” and “UNDERGROUND”… at public partys anyone who knows
about it has
the full right to be there.. asshole or not… “UNDERGROUND” is a
different
story… it’s promoted to tighter circles… all i’m saying is
this.. the
point of the psy-trance sceen is trancendance… none of you are
accomplishing that by passing judgment on others… “evolution
through
diversity… over specialize and die in weakness” -ghost in the
shell… how
can any of us obtain knowledge if you dont pass what we allready
know on to
others??? growth occures through the reinforcement of the basics..
all i
herd in the past 20 e-mails was ignerance… believe me.. i do
place
psy-heads in a class above all “ravers”… which is why we should
welcome
people on an individual level into the scene. but if they happen
to find
there own way there.. would that not be the collective showing
them a door
towards enlightenment?? tweek is not different then jeff going on
MTV and
saying (jeff i concider you a friend but you can check you tape of
mtv and
tell me i’m wrong) “and the little kids that want to come and do
lots of
drugs, so they don’t have to think. so ya, we have our own
sceen”… or
moby doing a movie track because quote “i figured if i didn’t do
it, someone
else would, and who know how that might have turned out.” shit..
i’ve seen
some prity shady ppl at bridge partys… what if mtv/vh1 ended up
there..
now that would be an entirely different story… that’s our
scene.. not SS
throwing massives to 10,000 kids…. please don’t get me wrong..
tweek doing
what he did is fucked up… it makes the various party sceens look
bad for
everyone.. not just us psy-heads…. but he has the right to do
what he
did.. he didn’t show off the trance sceen.. he did what has been
done
hundreds of time before.. went on camera and acknowledged “this is
what is
what”.. and showed the world what the massive/rave/party sceen is
all
about… i have mad love for all of you.. and every person i
meet.. but
psy-trance heads are the least willing to let someone new into
there world
of enlightenment… that’s not enlightenment.. damb.. even
christianity
keeps it’s doors open to even the cuerious.. vh1 wanted a story
from a
specific angle and out of the 10,000 kids who go to SS.. they
found tweek..
i say we just shoot him.. and everyone else who dosn’t fit exactly
into the
mold of the psy-head. whatever the fuck that’s suposed to mean…
let the
media do what they want.. they always have and always will… we
as a
community know the deal.. they havn’t shut us down yet.. and never
