I was good friends with Sangam since the early to mid 90s, when he worked at Morgan Stanley where he developed financial software. We spent many weekends out on the town, and together at his place near Union Square, with Sangam, me, and Dara, my girlfriend at the time, and her Jack Russel dog Tulip, who he adored and offered to keep. We would hang out with his brother Sanjay at uptown events.
One time Dara and I caught a Frenchman by the name of Francois DeBrabant stealing marijuana from Sangam, so we kicked him down several flights of stairs.
Sangam bought and refurbished Karma in NYC, a hookah lounge in the East Village. I ended up throwing many Goa Trash parties there in the early-mid 2000s, but by then Sangam and I didn’t talk much and he became reclusive.
Around the same time, I had discovered through one of his neighbors, one of my door people, that, sadly he had fallen into opiates. I’ve never known how to deal with that, so I let him be.
Five short years passed, and Sangam died at an extreme hot yoga retreat at the Isha Yoga Center in McMinnville, Tennessee. He was 46 and is survived by his father Jag, his mother Jaya and his brother Sanjay, who I also knew around the New York social scene.
Here is an article in the New York Observer where Sangam was speaking at a City Board Meeting about dogs. “Most of us don’t have children. My dog is my son.”
