When I was an anarchist in college in ’88 I split with some crusties because they wanted to Fuck tha Police and i was all into acid house. That schism never got resolved in general music culture.
IMHO rap is a corrosive culture that encourages violence. It’s exactly what the black community did not need. Musically, da dum dum… derivative LOL. They coulda gone on with the disco thing (too gay!), the peace and love thing (too gay!), or the Kraftwerk route pioneered by Afrika Bambaatta (too white!) There have been a couple OK tracks so this isn’t a blanket opinion.
Rap by its nature (HEAR ME TALK!) is gonna be an ego-driven circle jerk. If rap was invented by whites, and happened a few decades earlier, Trump woulda been a natural. Unlike other types of music, which build an inner world for you, rap forces you into someone else’s world and is not relatable unless you’re a criminal.
You wanna hear whiteboy rap done right? Listen to Scooter Or even Die Antwoord, if you wanna be a lil rebel. So good, and they don’t take themselves so seriously.
AND you throw a renegade party in the ghetto and put on rap, kids gonna get stabbed. LOL can you imagine a Gangsta Rap Rave at the bridge!?! That would be a bloodbath! Early rap in the Bronx in the 80s fizzled because off violence, and creeping commercialization.
Must be said though, R&B was a different story at that locale.
….and I really cringed when Puffy started changing his name – why is weed bad? Not commercial enough at the time? Fuck you, money chaser, I hope you rot in prison (but hey lucky you, you will be revered there. You finally met your people.)
