The yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag came from pagan times – colors for fire and water.
But by happy accident you can also look at it poetically as looking like Ukrainian prairie under a blue sky. This particular interpretation sticks with me.
Many say this flag was first flown in 1848 under the Austrian Empire, and as a national symbol in 1917 during an early struggle for independence from Russia. It was then outlawed until 1991.
Like when the Israeli flag first flew over a nation that hadn’t existed for thousands of years, it is very inspiring and gratifying that the flag flies proudly over independent Ukrainian lands today, and for the first time in generations a people can forge their own destiny.
These colors don’t run.
