Boat status: We officially have enough people and resources and financial backing from backroom benefactors to go forward with the boat party on June 23. We’re about half capacity with attendees; if you have been procrastinating on going I highly recommend you act now to reserve your space. The $35 includes food and drinks, and there’s nothing else trance wise going on that weekend. After a conversation with Mark “we decided” to have this technically a non-d event. As this is nonprofit, we’ll still use the speakers and mixer for this one, but not use the formal DJ nomination process. So far we have Steve-O from Nantucket, Tony from and Machinelf from Hyperspace as DJs. So step on up! So far we have a nice even mix of males and females, trance heads and bright newcomers. And we’ll call it the ALIEN SEX PARTY – HIPS AJOY.

It is the NYPD, they are the alien, we are normal, let’s not ever forget that.

The Save the Elf benefit was a success. F/XMike, Ran, Eitan, and surprise guest DJ Illusion did a slamming job. We’re so happy with the turnout (98) that we’re going to do it again, it will be called REHAB. Also, those on brainmachines who attended will keep their membership. Thanks to Michel for organizing the trance float at the Mermaid Parade on Saturday, and finally, thanks to EVERYONE who set sail Sunday for the Alien Sex Party after the thunderstorm. When we got there at the pier at 5pm it was raining but luckily there was a film festival going on under the tent where we set up our Middle Eastern buffet. The weather had forecast scattered rains clearing up by nightfall. We decided to wait until 7pm to decide whether to continue or cancel. We lost about 12 people. After the initial downpour the skies miraculously cleared – did God change his mind? The remaining 25 made a group decision and got on the ship, we took off at 7pm, a rainbow came out, a beautiful sunset, and we had an evening to remember. The moon crept out from the clouds, dark trippy music set the mood. We must have had eight people swimming, props to Soch and Ben and Mandy for keeping the trance and industrial tunes going. There is a lot of interesting detail that unfortunately won’t ever see the light of day… you had to have been there. We got back at 1:30am. Everyone couldn’t believe the vibe, the spirit, and the full-on insanity. For those who were no show, we did say, rain or shine. Even though the rain scared off 15 of the 40 people who had verbally promised they would show, and to hold a seat for them, keepin mind that if you committed, then that was a seat that could have gone to someone else. Thanks to some last-minute friends who boarded we ended up just with a loss of $250 on the food and drink, which was offset by the Save the Elf benefit on Friday. In the future, absolutely no reservations will be made without payment upfront, even from friends. It is my policy to always keep my word, and when we say we are going to do something, whether under the bridge or on a boat or at my house, to follow up and do it no matter what the cost or consequence. After I stayed at Michel’s house after being arrested and ejected from Tribeca, he had a huge crush on a Russian girl, Dasha, who had a huge crush on me and make no pains hiding it. This obviously created a very uncomfortable situation, and luckily my friend Jada and Michael hooked me up with their rent-controlled place in Kensington.

The stuttering, stratospheric strain of some anonymous trance track blares in the cool night air, and smoke billows from the engine room of a rusty, rain-slicked tugboat plowing its way up the choppy waters of the Harlem River. As we chug by Highbridge Park and under the George Washington Bridge, 18-year-old high school student Ben S. points out to the assembled revelers the verdant spot down the hill where he helps Machinelf, the boat event’s host, put on outdoor outlaw parties at the edges of this largely Dominican neighborhood.
“The atmosphere is very hippy-dippy,” allows Ben about these clandestine affairs, where banners featuring giant alien heads are unfurled, and sci-fi and psychedelic images are projected under the arches, creating a dramatic backdrop for dancing and dining alfresco. “It’s like having a communal picnic in the middle of the night. If you bring food, it becomes everybody’s food; if you bring beer, it becomes everybody’s beer; if you light a joint, it becomes everybody’s joint. There’s a feeling of complete freedom.”
“We only have two rules,” chimes in amateur chemist, Machinelf (so named after the angelic entities that ethnobotanist Terence McKenna claims guide the DMT user during a trip). “Leave no trace and be as respectful to the police and neighbors as possible.”
Give Rudy Giuliani some credit. Ten years ago, the sight of 200 gaily attired ravers happily strolling down 181st Street at four in the morning, carrying sleeping bags and heading toward a darkened park, would have been most unusual, but now it is a common occurrence during the warm weather. While the mayor’s heavy-handed clampdown on downtown nightspots has turned the regular clubs into burned-out shells of their former flamboyant glory, paradoxically, his successful war on street crime has opened up whole new party zones in uptown and outer-borough neighborhoods previously regarded as too dangerous for middle-class honky hipsters. All across town, not only in neighborhoods like DUMBO and Williamsburg, but also in places like Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, East New York, and the South Bronx, there’s a boom in word-of-mouth parties at unconventional locations (lofts, warehouses, boats, bridges), as night crawlers abandon the public spaces of the clubs for cozier spots where they can get down and boogie without feeling Big Brother is constantly watching their every move. Away from mainstream nightclubbing, and largely under the media radar, a new DIY spirit (after all, anyone with two arms can spin records) has taken hold among crews like Blackkat, Touched-by-a-DJ, Matter/:Form, the Madagascar Institute, and Freeskool, whose members throw small-scale, off-the-beaten-track bashes that attempt to reignite the festive and creative spirit so lacking from the large dance halls.
“People are tired of the drama,” says Touched-by-a-DJ’s Curt Ashley. “They’ve had one too many bad experiences. They’d rather go somewhere more intimate and be among friends and listen to good music without all the hassle.”
“What’s driving this phenomenon,” agrees Ben S.’s uncle, techno promoter Matt E. Silver, “is that people are bored shitless with the clubs. Young people still want to go out and party. But because of Giuliani, they can’t do it at Twilo or the Tunnel anymore.”
Back on board the floating chill-out room, the boat takes a sharp left at Inwood Hill Park before anchoring off the Palisades that loom like some primeval forest in the moonlight. The chattering party-goers—drawn from the more philosophical end of the post-rave movement, the type of folks who lecture you about how unnatural cocaine is compared to MDMA—immediately disrobe and dive butt naked into the Hudson River. “Anabolic fluid! Anabolic fluid!” screams Machinelf, his bobbing head barely visible in the murk.
On the deck, which doubles as a dance-floor, a red-haired Irish woman named Orla explains the appeal of these illicit parties over established discos. “You can create your own atmosphere. You don’t have it dictated to you.”
With obnoxious bouncers ordering you around, obtrusive body searches, cookie-cutter environments, capricious door policies, and the same old music, not to mention the pervasive paranoia bred by the constant surveillance of the state, going out clubbing in New York is now more of an ordeal than a pleasure. These days clubs seem primarily like playgrounds for annoying Wall Streeters, steroid-pumped muscle boys, and callow teenagers looking for cheap chemical thrills. No wonder that nightlife insiders tend to shun the large-scale venues.
Maverick musician and nightlife veteran Moby is old enough to remember a time when New York clubland was an important cultural institution, not just a place to ogle aspiring models, get drunk on overpriced cocktails, and strain one’s neck in the vain hope of catching a glimpse of some tacky celebrity.
“I rarely ever go to big nightclubs in New York anymore,” said Moby, who has been going out in Gotham since the days of the Mudd Club. “I’m fed up with gigantic clubs where you get treated like shit. The vast majority of times I’ve gone out in the last few years has either been to loft parties or roof parties. The sound system isn’t that good. The DJ isn’t that special. You have to bring your own beer. But the atmosphere at house parties is better, because you’re not being manhandled by a 300-pound gorilla.”
Moby sees house parties as antidotes to the sterile conformity and lack of personality of the mainstream clubs and lounges, where buzz, money, and celebrity are valued above creativity and originality.
“The reason most of my friends like house parties is they know Donald Trump isn’t going to be there,” he continued. “House parties are the antithesis of trendy lounges. You go up in a freight elevator. You pay five bucks or nothing to get in. No one asks to see your ID or if you’re on the list. Most people are dressed down. And everybody is sweaty.”
But not all house parties are created equal. They come in all shapes and sizes, from the bare-bones affairs that Moby is talking about to elaborate costume extravaganzas like the hoity-toity Goth galas that House of St. Eve sometimes throws, where a select group of invitees sip absinthe while dressed as romantic characters from myth and legend; or the nouveau riche blowouts that playboy-millionaire Jonathan Leitersdorf used to stage in his swanky Lower Broadway penthouse apartment, where monied party freaks sipped champagne and danced until dawn under the chandeliers of the impressive Mediterranean-style villa-cum-disco—complete with gardens, swimming pool, and spectacular wraparound views of Manhattan—that Leitersdorf thoughtfully constructed on the roof of his cavernous bachelor pad.
Of course, house parties have always been around—but a few years back, they began to occupy a bigger part of the nighttime landscape. For a while, the dotcom bubble financed this trend. “The Internet expansion fueled the bigger parties,” says DJ Sean B, whose well-regarded Freeskool parties are a regular pit stop on the current scene. “You had all these young, creative people with money in their pockets. That was a big spur,” he said. While Pseudo, for instance, eventually went bankrupt, the parties at the start-up’s offices—multimedia orgies of drugs, technology, and too much cash that sometimes lasted for days—proved a far bigger hit than the service (Internet television) the company was supposed to provide.
But Moby is right. Most of the current parties are resolutely low-budget, underground events. “It’s all about building these small communities,” continues Sean B. “Each party has its following, which is built by e-mail and word-of-mouth. You need people who support you and feel strongly about what you’re doing. It’s the same spirit as the early rave parties.”
The night before Machinelf’s boat party, Blackkat, a DJ collective that sprang from the squats of the Lower East Side and which has thrown parties everywhere from East Timor to East New York, is staging a bash called “Depth Charge”—promoted on their Web site as “an up-all-night Mermaid underwater adventure”—in a large set-design studio at the unfashionable end of Park Slope. On the windy roof deck, with forks of lightning providing the dramatic lighting effects, a 30-foot-high homemade metal swing—held together with weights and bits of duct tape—spins brave party-goers in 360-degree circles, threatening to catapult them into the nearby Gowanus Canal. Inside, circus performers and break-dancers, anarchists and artists—folks generally tired of the commercialized nightlife scene—rub shoulders as DJ Chrome lays down the sort of experimental sounds not normally heard in mainstream venues. Suddenly, the surrounding streets are filled with flashing fire engines. The Blackkat crew has some unwelcome guests—firemen in heavy plastic coats and helmets, looking for code violations. Chrome escorts them through the throng, and after a brief inspection, the firemen decide everything is fine and leave the party undisturbed.
“We try to behave like responsible adults,” says Chrome’s partner, Jason Blackkat, also a DJ. “We work hard to create a safe and creative environment. We make sure fire exits are clearly marked, there’s a working sprinkler system, and there’s no flammable material in the space. And we’re very respectful of the surrounding neighborhood.”
Blackkat threw its first parties in 1996 at the 5th Street Homestead, between Avenues A and B. The next year, cops raided the squat and allowed city workers to demolish the place. Blackkat sued the city and eventually won an out-of-court settlement. Forced out of lower Manhattan, Blackkat relocated to Brooklyn, where it now throws parties practically every weekend. “More and more, the parties have spread out from Williamsburg deeper and deeper into Brooklyn.”
What Blackkat and their ilk do is illicit, but whether it’s actually illegal is a moot point. They try to stay within the appropriate laws and ordinances. For instance, for each event, they purchase a one-night beer-and-wine license. But when does a private gathering cross over the line to become an illegal public assembly? “The laws pertaining to public assembly are deliberately vague,” says DJ Chrome. “A lot of it is up to the individual policeman. Different cops tell you different things. Some say you need a public assembly permit or a cabaret license, other’s say because it’s private, you don’t.”
One argument that club owners use to protest the crackdown on their establishments is that it forces party-goers into illegal and dangerous spaces. Yet the atmosphere at the house parties feels a lot safer than most big discos. These are overwhelmingly peaceful and friendly events, where displays of excessive intoxication are relatively rare. But occasionally trouble rears its ugly head. This past May, Connecticut teenager William Jouannes was stabbed and beaten at one of the under-the-bridge raves in Washington Heights after he decided to confront a bunch of hooded party crashers who had just jacked his backpack. Despite a collapsed lung and internal bleeding, the lucky raver survived.
After being shut down by the Social Club Task Force—originally formed in the wake of the Happyland fire—on several occasions for various minor infractions, Blackkat are sick and tired of being hassled by the authorities. “Freedom of assembly is being denied on a regular basis by the city and the NYPD based on a general xenophobia for something they don’t understand,” contends Jason. “In any real democracy there should be a place for young people to come together on their own terms and just have fun. You can’t deny people’s need to dance. They will always do this—they can’t stop it and it’s asinine to try.”

This party and name were inspired by Machinelf’s travails after the Duane Street squat was busted. After that, there was the first outlaw after 9/11, the epic Burning Bert (October 12, Bridge/Duane Street/Coney Island) and, four years later, Burning Buddha (September 3-5, 2005, Pine Barrens)
Location: Poughkeepsie, at Mike Lembo’s the apple farmers place Lembo Lake, now an ATV Track. It was by a lake and it was foggy. It rained during the setup.
Loris and Bori had a lot of very exotically clad minions.
An Egyptian girl in a hot pink fluoro sari was standing on the train station, on Lori’s last trip with the van, she wasn’t on the list, but she knew about it, so I scooped her up along with the last load.
We brought a log drummer we met busking Grand Central stop of 7 train, and he was a major in the drum circle
Friday nite someone had a wet dog and was using a blow dryer to dry it, and blew the breaker. Rocky and Guillaume did their combined visuals, and they ended with a freeze-framed a shot of Machinelf, and a voiceover of “ this is your brain on drugs”
Saturday night Charity did a fire dance over Machinelf, who was laying on the ground like Jesus. Burning bits of white gas would occasionally fall onto his chest.
Terry Hopper had a whole can of joints that he handed out. ATVers were down by the lake, they nearly ran over Kelly when she was curled up in a blanket like a burrito in the track
DJs Boris, FX Mike Mikhail Gervits, Gosha Danilov, Eitan Xes, Machinelf playing with “we can work it out” by the Beatles on Sunday. It was sunny by the lake where we all were very stoned.
Back in August 2001, after the Generator had disappeared from the collective of the Devotional Ministry of Trance, we decided to
A. Help Out by throwing a Save the Elf fundraiser at Club Speeed
B. Indulge Boris’ nostalgia for the Spirit of Glastonbury ’89
C. throw a festival in our own backyard since Boris didn’t have a green card to fly around America with and couldn’t travel legally.
D. Help out Mike Lembo up at Lembo Lake Orchards, who was losing his property due to big commercial apple companies undercutting prices and buying out the local farms.
I had been reading about this other festival, (on Compuserve and Prodigy, in those days) called Burning Man, in Nevada that seemed to embody the PLUR spirit and the GOA vibe.
We wanted to do something with our new creative friends from the psyworld that we’d been hanging with at Club Neva, and at the secret Devotional Ministry of Trance bridge parties, and at our weekly SPIN parties at Rock Reily’s in Queens.
So I gathered up all the videographers (Rocky Kenworthy, and Guillaume Clave), Chai Tea Makers(Rebecca Patience Roman and Mathias the scientist from Germany), Fire Spinners (Cherry Tea and Dan Covan), Djs (Indra, FX Mike, Soch, Fofa, Shay, Dan, Boris, Machinelf, Chico, Fumi, Kamal, Kent, James, Ritan from Spiritual Beings, Vitalik, and many others ), lighting designer Ben Light-O-Matic, decorators, log drummers, and live musicians (Dean Zigoris aka Onoman and Dan Covan), glitter kids and candy ravers, fabulous party animals and maniac cosplayers, and anybody in the NY/NJ/Philly scene who was actively creative and a producer who made things happen and told them we’d be throwing me a ‘Birthday Party’ – which was a basically good excuse.
The catch, they wouldn’t be making money or paying a lot to attend, they’d all be working it and participating, like the 10 principles I’d read about… in short, this was to be a miniature Burning Man-type event —- and we would call it —Burning Elf. It was to be a prep for the real thing, we’d teach the 10 principles and really live it. The funny thing was – nearly everybody from this event ended up going to the real Burning Man festival…and we were the only ones who didn’t- until 2010 when we finally made it after getting married and getting Boris his green card!
We charged $10/person/day to camp at Lembo Lake, payable directly to Mike Lembo. Everybody would contribute their special talent, and we’d all have a major festival that was secret, like the ’89 London Orbital parties Boris told me about – no address disclosed – you had to show up at the Poughkeepsie train station at a certain hour, where a van would pick you up and shuttle you to the secret location. We had about 250-300 people, between the registered people and those Intrepid Travellers who always seem to find the party. Including one girl, dressed in a fluoro orange sari who said she heard about it in EGYPT and had to come. She really was Egyptian….! So we bundled her up into the van and brought her…what were we gonna do after that long journey?!
And it was magical: the Candy ravers set up their little area like a Theme Camp – Candyland, of course. There were hippie camps, and biker camps, lots of tapestries with aliens and Indian gods and goddesses, fluorescent light and string art, and a big sheet hung between two trees that had the most amazing projections on it. Intelligent lighting and lasers up-lighting the branches of the trees, hoopers, and fire spinners, and dancers, drum circles, and lots of hugging, happy people, all working together to make this thing happen for one magical weekend. It had never been done here on this scale before, and could never have happened without everybody contributing. We shared food gifts and bracelets, talent, and shelter from the rain (cuz what festival would be complete without a rainstorm?), and when it was all done we joined hands and did a grid walk, picking up cigarette butts and trash—-Leaving No Trace. There were no casualties, and many friendships were made, and inspired many festivals for years to come. In fact the next year, we did it again – this time we called it Lord of the Rings, and it was even bigger.
Ben Light-O-Matic had an ex-GF who had property in the Chenango River Valley, and we had no shortage of people wanting to come.
This time, the areas were set up to represent places in the novels and everybody stayed in character all weekend. There was New ORC City, Lothlorien chill zone by the river, Mines of Moria main dance area, Hobbiton car camping area. I remember one morning seeing an elf in latex ears, tights, and a wooden sword slashing away in the shallow waters by the swimming hole, and asked him (Noel from Ireland) what he was doing. He said,” I’m trying to lull them into a false sense of security!”
We had a costume contest, of course, won by a Galadriel in drag- Mathias, who later won fame in the scientific world for making glow in the dark mice.
Of course, the whole cat n mouse secrecy thing was stressed; I included instructions in the prep emails to be subtle and not do a walk of shame in the local village, or give the game away to the locals….and what did I see in the local grocery meat aisle, pushing a shopping cart but Machinelf, in full Orc latex facial prosthetics, wearing a grass skirt, and a codpiece made from rainbow-striped underwear!
So the locals heard about us.
They attended in droves and brought beer cans, (which were scattered everywhere but shared freely, and created quite a challenge to the whole grid walk LNT thing) and everybody had so much fun the local village paper wrote a review and then promptly invited us back to “do it again next year”!
One interesting side-story was the immediate neighbors, who deputized someone to be brave and come down the hill to find out what was going on down there, with those strangely dressed people. I had to go up to their porch, dressed in an outfit with tree branches in my hair (the elusive and never seen Entwife), and act out the entire LOTR story for them. The movie had not come out yet, and they were clueless. ” We thought you were eatin’ babies or something,” they said. I responded, “Well, you’ve already missed the 6:00 seating, but we’ll rustle up some leftovers!” I assured them we weren’t Satanists, lol. They came down, had a dance, and the next morning brought over some fresh eggs from their hens for the gang.
PLUR indeed!
The next year I was too burnt out from the management of all this, and luckily, others were there to pick up the reins: Omnitribe did Omnidance at Echo lake and of course, Boris built a Pyramid Stage for them, and we provided art: nomes and plywood mushrooms, and a movie theatre for a chillout space. Not much of a layoff really…..
There have been many psy events since; parties in the Pine Barrens of NJ, collectives born and morphed, Wonderland loft parties that birthed several famous Burning man collectives. Many of those original creative people are still doing events, DJing, traveling gaining international fame in the festival world. Many of us helped in getting the Chapel Of Sacred Mirrors off the ground and been actively employed there… another link in the rave- Burning Man scene, funnily enough. Mike Lembo didn’t lose the farm, but changed into an ATV park, several members married each other and had kids who are now assuredly attending their own festivals, and much art has been created. We all still keep in touch thanks to the magic of the cyberworld and Facebook, lol, and I fully expect the PLUR will keep rippling outwards.

Hey everyone!! hey everybody!!! its Serena!! I just wanted to send out a big warm thank you to everyone, we had an amazing turn out last night at Jarrod’s lounge!! So many people came, everyone was having a great ton of smiles and felt many good vibes…were going to do it again next week, so anyone that didn’t make it yesterday come and check it out!!! Guillaume from atomic juice will be providing visuals again, vitalik and shai will be spinning again as well!!! this bar is great,!! its a beautiful space, with room to dance, a pool table, satellite t.v….and drinks are really cheap!! $3 beers!!! $1 for soda or juice….$5 mixed drinks…. there are only 2 things that must be mentioned…. please bring i.d. with you…this bar is 21 and over and a lot of people showed up with no i.d. the bouncer was lenient this time, but next week if you don’t have an i.d. for 21 you will not be permitted to enter….the reason is that this bar got slammed with a $500 fine last week on Saturday when a kid who was 20 was caught drinking in the bar… the only other issue is if you must smoke weed, do not do it in front of the bar…or in the bar, walk around the block or something!!!! please be aware there is a police precinct directly across the street!!!!do not go out in the back yard to smoke either, last night people were walking to the corner and were puffing right there with the cops across the street, and people kept going in and out of the bar, and it looked so obvious….I myself am a true pothead, yet I know better than that…so please respect this establishment, they don’t want any problems with the cops, in fear of being shut down…. ok…with that said….it was an amazing night…..everyone kept walking up to me and thanking me, telling how wonderful of a party it was!! so come be a part of it!!! ill post the directions again soon…..were gonna do it again next week! if there’s a really big turnout, it will become a weekly event!! so please come and support us!!! lots of love and big hugs and kisses, Serena 🙂

All would be well in mine if something stupid had not happened last night at AMIZURA. At the very end of the night, I was chilling out waiting to help get the projection team home, when a heated exchange occurred by the main entrance. It seems that some friggin cheeseball decided to take some of the beautiful paintings that were hanging at the club. Note: the security did nothing to stop that. I saw how upset the artist was. I don’t think that I even know him, but man oh man do I understand how that could hurt. I would like to ask if anyone can help reunite the artist with his work. Does anyone know who took them? Did anyone see anything? I would like to say that if the person responsible for taking them could be so mature as to return them, I promise not to snap them in two, so long as they are returned promptly and in the same condition that they were “found”. Now, I must say that I certainly hope that the missing! artwork does not go the way of my lost Blue Lights, so, Please, help if you can. Do the right thing, stay anonymous, whatever, just help if you can. For some strange reason, I feel really bad for the guy and want to help him out. Thanks Mark Lorenz

Re: brain Jeff is back I think everybody should take a step back and give Mark a big round of applause! As you know when I was jailed and then penniless and homeless I entrusted Mark to running the lists. I am no longer facing jail time for my summer exploits. It’s just a ticket and I will fight that. Maybe even work with the NYPD on a program, set up the Photosonix 505 audio stress reducer in the jails, who knows. But lesson learned: DO NOT SQUAT and PARTY at the same time. I have no idea what’s going to happen with all the lists, but I think having only 2 or 3 is better. Basically, brainmachines is events and news to the general public (elfreehab became machinelf and is getting folded back into brainmachines) safetydance is to people that I know personally DMT is a psytrance religion/social club run with mark and costs $35 to join and you have to either identify yourself to me or mark (now is a great time – besides way cool trance-inducing events, ski season is coming up and we are mobilizing again with a house in the Poconos. I think the reason why less people came is that last night there was a $3 cover charge to get in. I myself am completely poor, and even though the cover was only 3 I understand why it turned some people away….money is really tight right now….. but the reason why I started this party was not to make a profit, yet instead, it was created to bring everyone together where we can laugh and dance and smile….. therefore…. were gonna get rid of the cover charge. As of 12 am on Saturday 10/13, the Burning Burt party has been moved
to 146 Duane Street #2B, between Church and West Broadway.
It’s three blocks below Canal, close to the A, C, E and 1, 9 trains.
Helicopters hovered the bridge party, and the police closed down the
other party location. All the artwork and video installations will
be moved down to the Duane Street location. It’s 3 rooms, 2500 to
3000 square feet of space to move and groove in.
The party will go as planned, till Sunday.
And then the squat got busted, again. So the party got moved, again.
NYPD came before Bert could be burned to the tune of Every Day is Halloween. We are taking him to the beach near Coney Island to fullfeel the burn.
Meanwhile, we will send positive energy towards our global trance brotherhood at Earthdances everywhere.
For we as New Yorkers are particularly compelled to make sense of what happened on September 11.

Summary of weekend:
It was a definitely a full spectrum weekend. It’s 3pm Sunday and we just got
back from near Coney Island.
After the bridge event was moved to Duane Street at 1am, we went until 830am.
Wylie’s whole floor had been busted open, so there was a whole warren of
rooms. And a newly opened penthouse on the top floor with a big black marble
bathroom. It was in the same building that I had gotten into all that
trouble month ago.
The police were very freaked out when they came. There were all these broken
parking meters in the hallway, and there was a shrine to evil Bert in one big
room, with weird messages, coloring book pages, and doctored photos of Osama
and Evil Bert all over the walls, with eery candlelight everywhere. Another
room was for drumming. The DJs all played good sets.
I resisted with all my might to move out towards Coney Island but it worked
out very well; it was a BEAUTIFUL day and sunset and nightfall. SHAIKID, his
friend, Akin, and Kate Mohandia all played good music. We had a good crowd..
At 7pm we all danced around the fire holding hands. We also burned Evil Bert.
Hats off to Y from infornography, who sent out crucial emails in the middle
of the night and also brought Evil Bert pictures and hung them everywhere; to
Lori and Boris for bringing art and UV and gas cans; to Ben for loaning the
VRT; Charles at Nexuslabs for helping move, to Wylie for being a hamhead who
made it happen with equipment, van, and location; to all the Irish, and
everybody else who helped out.
Although the cold weather is coming I am hoping that DMT will stay active.
Because there’s never been as twisted and crazy vibe event as Friday. If you

The Kool-Aid got burnt So now those of you who attended Burning Kool-Aid DMT benefit at the penthouse trance party Friday will agree with me… that is the phattest location for a party, ever. I challenge anyone to wring that much fun for $5, ever. Many thanks to Wylie to pulling it off. THIS HAS BEEN A WYLIE TRANCE MISSION!! I got to be the elfin Hugh Hefner of trance, with a bathrobe outfit, ears, and a black marble bath nest with running water. The only thing that was remiss was that there were no naked people in the bathroom. Dror, SHAIKID, Vitalik, Tony, Kate, Akin and I all had a great time spinning. Touch’s SEAN HALL even showed up!! Many thanks to Andrew Thorn from for bringing great music. The drummers in the chillout, the meowing people perched around on ledges, the rubber RATS everywhere Some BTS kid named Jeff (Muff’s sidekick) dared to try to get in, we practically rolled him down the stairs. I forgot to thank him for showing up, so that we could kick him out. The roof was amazing. Wylie’s old-timer roommate tripped for the first time in over 25 years – and the last time was a freakout. This time, in the right set and setting, the genie came out of the bottle. He wept for the WTC victims but was at peace finally. We will be using this space often through the winter. This is all a warmup for Halloween… the VW van will be done up like the pied piper with a big church organ, and everyone will be gathered together with rat masks, and head to Frying Pan. After the police cleared people out at 9am we painted ourselves blue and did body paint silhouettes on the wall. The Omnitribe party was good – we were still coated in blue paint. Ibogaine from Denmark was good. Angel’s party was busted by 5am; Wylie had rented out his speakers to him, out in Greenpoint, but Wylie came through AGAIN and had an afterparty at his house – with IBOGAINE!! on the house system. There are TWO after parties after Synthetic Sadhus. Angel’s at Wylie’s penthouse is most definitely on. Just got word from Angel, the party is most definitely on. His internet access has been down. He’s been talking to Gilles from Synthetic Sadhus for several days getting everything together about having artists come. The space is breathtaking, and will only be available for a little while longer, ergo my enthusiasm for a day party there. The Mackey sound system will be kickass.
Yet, at the same time, a group of local NYC people have self-organized and are doing an afterparty in Jamaica on the 2nd story of a bar. Although I wish these people were real bastards, they are not and are all good friends. Beloved Boris and Lori. I wish them the best, I personally will attend both. Perhaps the best advice I can offer to navigate through this dilemma is to go to both if you can, if you cannot go to the one that is closest to where you’re going home to afterward. There are other conflicts coming up, too. Looks like Spectra may be doing something same night or same weekend as Omnitribe around Dec 14. Alex Grey’s fundraiser is also hopefully that weekend, too. These kinks really need to be ironed out. Competition is good, up to a point, then it kills both parties…

Angel & Wylie’s party review
Although Angel said there might be DJs from Synthetic, they were all too tired to show. Both parties attempted to get them to come. This next paragraph will sound suspiciously identical to Mark’s at the last SS. I handed out flyers for both Angel’s and Sophie’s Birthday and Wylie’s afterparty and Wylie’s Halloween party. I ran out of afterparty flyers early so I wrote the address down on a notepad. It sucked because a friend was handing out flyers for the afterparty in Jamaica and we were competing viciously. He said “Don’t go there… Police, Squalid Squat…” and I said “Nitrous.” I’m not even going to elaborate, we both sinned. But I did mention official SS sanction. My smile started to disappear. I never want to be in that position again – who would? With two afterparties there is an incentive to compete and prevaricate, even. And John Emmanuel was promoting Tsunami. I have a recurring nightmare of us party people spending our old age like that on a street corner…
First I went to the afterparty at Kate’s bar in Jamaica. Production values were high with UV and cobwebs. I was expecting to see Ollie Wisdom there but he was not. I only heard Icy Coil, she was good. I saw Akin, some Japanese people, some Irish people, Fumi, Kate, Storm, Derby, Ori, Boris and Lori. At noon I drove to Tribeca for Angel and Wylie’s afterparty. I got there around one. I was happy to see a good crowd there, probably the most I’ve seen for an indoor after-event. It was a very diverse crowd, and people came and gone all day and night, coming from Synthetic, Blakkat, and home, even. Even hippies. Wylie had gone to Blakkat to rally troops the night before. Steve-O was getting everybody hopped up. Mojo was there with Jedi nitrous. There was all sorts of crazy stuff happen of it involving rubber rats. I came on and played all over the place as usual. For a diverse crowd it’s impossible to please everyone, esp. when they are used to vinyl. Thorn from came on around 3. He was incredible. He is friends of Ollie Wisdom’s friends, not a personal friend like I inadvertently told some people. Dan Covan brought out his drum machine and an Israeli had an electric guitar plugged into the system. Wylie went downstairs and crashed around 5pm. Random people kept coming. The police showed up from another roof and told us to turn it down and left. Ori showed at 6pm at a lull but still played tunes. More crazy people came and we all lit candles and added more “art” to the walls. It went until 9pm. See everyone Halloween!

It has been the most brilliant weekend. First and foremost, thanks to all the DJs that spun, you guys and gals are totally amazing and we need to hear more of you. Even though there wasn’t a huge crowd, the dance floor was never empty, and that is the most important thing. Uri, Ben, Merry, Akin, Boris, Fumi, Daka, Storm, what an amazing line-up of DJs, there was not one bad track all day, the mixing was wonderful, the music was full-on and uplifting, it was a truly an enlightening experience. Promotors take note, these guys and girls need more bookings, their style, messages, energy needs to be shared, come out of the darkness and into the light. Thanks to everyone that came, you were such a great crowd, danced, talked, laughed made merry all day long. There were games of pool, there were great connections made sitting at the downstairs bar, and then upstairs danced, and ran and stomped all over the place. It was nice to have the balcony to get some fresh air and herbal refreshments. Thanks also to the people who came, who weren’t even at the Amazura. Major thank you to Lori and Boris. Boris your sound system is incredible. Clarity of sound is so important, it was killer. Lori thank you for donating your lights and backdrops. Boris and Paul thank you for your strong arms and all the work you put in Satur day and Sunday night when it all had to brought back. When I was inquiring last week no-one was planning anything, and when we finally got the go-ahead from the bar owner (after trying to persuade him for 2 weeks) it turned out that something else was going to happen, we couldn’t go back and cancel at that stage (the problem with indoor legal safe venues I guess). We will have to keep in contact for the future so we can either join up or make an alternate arrangement. This is a scene where we should all be coming together and making the vibe and dream come alive, uniting the people, minds and energies of the wonderful beings in this world. We get enough conflict and opposition from the outside world, so we need to stick together. The great news is that the owner liked us very much and liked the music and the whole thing so we are welcome again for future possibilities. Is anyone planning anything this weekend?? Pied Piper and l ergot When I was in sixth grade in 1979 I did a videotaped book report on the Pied Piper of Hamelin, and how the insanity was blamed on a purple rye wheat ergot mold that caused hallucinations… little did my young Texan mind realize the weird synchronicities that were in store. Turns out that although l comes from the ergot mold, the ergot mold itself is poisonous and sometimes brought on fits of wild dancing in its victims. This has a sick twist with the anthrax scare now, I realize, but the theme has been in the works for weeks and we’re not going to let Osama ruin our “art.” So to paraphrase Wylie, “COME RATS, COME CHILDREN, FOLLOW! FOLLOW!” We’re definitely going to hell for this one. I read a book once that blamed ergot for the Pied Piper story that he used moldy rye to make the children of Hamelin sick…and, when asked by their parents to play for them that he might assuage their “dancing sickness”, he piped them all away to slave traders. The modern version of ergot produces much more spectacular results: l. 🙂 That’s one hell of a stretch! What about the rats? You can’t have a Pied Piper story without rats! 🙂 And selling the children into slavery kind of ruins the ending, doesn’t it? Very dark and cynical. Maybe there was some modern ergo involved in the drafting of this book? 🙂 Besides, children are already living in their own world. l would only make them more child-like

The float will start at Spring Street and go up 6th Avenue to 22nd Street. The theme is the “Pied Piper of Gotham”. There will be cool dance music on the float (Jeff is the Pied Piper) and rats and children are encouraged to join the float and the parade and dance up to 22nd street. At 22nd Street we will bust a move and take the parade, the children and the rats west on 23rd street all the way to the river-just like in the fairy tale-where we have booked pier 63 and the Frying Pan for the huge after-party. There will a $100 first prize for the best rat costume (plus a big piece of cheese) and also reduced admission for all rats ($8). Else mention my name or get a flyer ($10). Wylie very very narrowly pulled it off; we were soooo close to not making into the parade (we were not registered) but we were a sight to behold. a top-notch job on everyone’s part. we represented the genre well… We drove the float through the streets banging tunes right up to the Frying Pan boat party. demerara is on 215 W28th between 7th and 8th. How the Mayoral Race’s Budget Issue affects our Trance tonight The activities of the Pied Piper of New York, likewise, will definitely have to be curtailed. Although his removal of children from some towns has lightened the financial burden from those towns, lessening the taxes levied, etc., for those particular towns, other towns, to which the children have been lead, have had to take up the slack, with serious challenges to the community coffers. Officials are considering cutting back on the official and paid hours of the Piper, in order to reduce the numbers of children walking to new communities. Although busing has been suggested to cut down on the cost, time/profit studies have shown that walking, even for some hours, is still more cost-effective than busing, especially when one includes the costs of gas, tires, etc.

Wylie’s Trance Mission Penthouse Parties… will go on, but in the future they will not be posted on the psytrance schedule on this list. As far as I’m concerned you’ll have to be on the Safetydance list, and you have to be acquainted with a list member to join. Reason being, even though it’s huge it’s still technically a house party… even though it’s getting torn down soon there’s still the issue of bags and purses etc… Wylie getting a couple more $5 admissions ain’t worth not knowing to trust who’s coming in the door. it’s a sweet location and we want to ensure that we know everyone coming in. Brainmachines has hit 925 members and there’s no fucking way we know everybody on it. Which is good for Synthetic or Tsunami – any commercial party, basically – but not good for a more intimate gathering. so if you aren’t on safetydance and I know you send me an email with your details and I’ll add you in. Why all this? I have a lot of friends who look shady, so I’m not going to jump to any conclusions. But Garen got his camera stolen. I’m not pointing fingers but the trance scene has a ZERO TOLERANCE for thugs and thieves. It just doesn’t happen with people we know. Psy-trance is barely stumbling for the next two weeks in NYC. With the exception of the psytrance/techno party at Demerara tonight, the next weekend night will be something Nov 16, and that might possibly end up being only souped-up Chiletrance at Opium Den vibe (no cabaret license).

Aside from tonight, through December there’s a weeknight Tsunami event, one Synthetic event, a probable Omnitribe party, and the Alex Grey Benefit. Double bookers, take note. With all the energy thrown into splitting a community down the middle in the past, now we are in a period where there is nothing planned. Are we so inflexible as to not be able to move dates? This is one of the reasons to publish a calendar like this. Access to Wylie’s penthouse was ruined by shady ravers he invited from the techno party. So that’s out. And I’m not going to try to generate interest for a bridge party anytime soon under these war conditions. Maybe the old Russian place? Club Moscow? I would like to openly encourage those with sound to do something even outside – that’s what tents and/or campfires are for. Or, if anybody has a loft or space and wouldn’t mind making some money, let me know. Any atypical events planned this way will only be posted on the Safetydance list.

This will happen at the stroke of Midnight.

private room. Wylie OK’d everything with the landlord, we just need to cut down on

the BurninGoa/Meteor Shower party was a rousing success. It went a full 30 hours. People brought tents, hot dogs, dogs, things to burn, and good energy. I took a female friend who had never been to any of these things and she was blown away. And the meteor shower – wow. The fire was burning bright and everyone was screaming. At midnight we had cut out to The Burning Man Decompression for a couple hours. It was festive but full of drunks and the music was mostly pretty uninspiring. But even ‘Girls Just want to have Fun” sounded good in that atmosphere.

I’ll give this party a thumbs up. First off, Infected Mushroom was a no-show due to a strike in the Israeli airports, but I like my Fungi non-infected so that was OK. Opher carried it off, though. I don’t think too many people really cared though if you can gauge to desire to go psychedelic by the way people dress. People generally dressed like they were watching Late Night with David Letterman eating Froot Loops. The place was PACKED wall to wall with Israelis and Russians. It reminded me of the good old days with Tsunami at Vinyl, but the Freaks were missing. You know who I’m talking about. The sound was deafening but thank God they had earplugs at the bar. I missed Deeper in Zen. Tristan and Erez were good. There was never a disappointing lull in any set. The place was pretty crowded and the place was CRAWLING with security. The place contrary to rumors is not going to close. My artist female companion tried to kill with the fire extinguisher a big Russian ex-thug who was following me. Then, later on, when I asked her to dance and had two bottles of paint in my hands, she grabbed the paints and threw them everywhere, on the floor, on people’s faces. It made a nice mosaic on the floor. My, how far she’s come since her Kostabi days. She warned me that if people aren’t going crazy next time I bring her to a trance event she will go ballistic on us again, so consider yourself warned!! So I got two warnings from security without getting ejected, one for me and one for her. Ohhhh, the coolness. Hats off to John Emmanuel and Yanni for pulling this together! I hope you made enough money to continue to do what you’re doing! P.S. I think it was out somewhere that Angel was doing something Saturday – he’s not.

He is an inspiration to transcend. Wizzy Noise got to play. Charity did a great fire twirling event. A lot of art got sold. The slideshow was wonderful; he met his wife while tripping!! Much props to everyone including Kelly and Eli Morgan for putting this together. Rocky, James Deeper in Zen, David Coventry all had worked months on video that morphed out Alex Grey’s art. Video was projected from on top of a 10′ high pyramid built with Sacred Geometry maestro DNA Dan looked like the all-seeing eye on the back of a one-dollar bill. There will be more of these most special and meaningful of events. I get weary of going to the same old parties seeing the same old tapestries seeing the same people again and again. It’s great for the first five years but change has been needed for some time, and the solution is reaching out to allied communities and forming a true psychedelic spiritual movement.
The Afterparties From various reports today the afterparties all were not worth going to, for the basic reason that there were THREE of them, and multiple afterparties suck big time if for no other reason than that they split the community and are even more divisive than this email. I’m glad I just went home with my loved one and crashed.
The official Kelly afterparty which costs $40 had a missing Palmpilot incident and everyone was kicked out at 10am -The $5 unofficial afterparty downtown was not attended -And the party in Brooklyn that was supposed to be the afterparty for Wizzy Noise was moved at the last minute to double book with alex grey – damn that to HELL!
Wizzy Noise at Limelight Friday’s party at Limelight was packed too. It was the first psytrance event there in recent memory and it was a success. Kiana is to be commended for putting it together. Some BTS guys showed but I could not extricate them without a reason; consequently, a bag or two got stolen. Lisa did a painting performance from the stage where she threw black paint and drinks at the crowd; many guidos were very pissed and some girls were trying to help her.

Rubulad, aka the Party That Can Now Be Named, But Not Listed With an Address
After a dozen or so listings, and a now nearly forgotten first and certainly not last series of spirited arguments with people who shouldn’t really be making decisions over using the name and address of this party, Nonsense is now happy to at least name the party that we’ve heretofore called The Party That Can Not Be Named.
Rubulad.
Rubulad (rube-you-la d) is, even after dozens of regular, almost monthly parties, still one of t he best things going in New York. We think anyone who complains about it be ing crowded, or tired, is a thankless whiner who should move back to Great Neck. Physically, Rubulad is quite large, wonderfully decorated, often
absurdly crowded, and almost always fun. There are bands, DJs, art, people in costumes, and many fascinating comestibles.
Because it is an ostensibly private party we have been specifically asked to not print the name or location of the place. If you would like to know it, please email us; we won’t think you’re uncool or out-of-the-know (and who cares anyway? cool people suck). As a public service announcement, know that it has been extremely crowded in
recent months and generally doesn’t even get comfortable until 2 or 3 a. You can go early to beat the crowds and catch all of the performances, or you can show up around 3a and have more room. From there, you have about a three or four-hour window to dance, flirt, and do make out. After around
6a, the vibe can be a little odd and maybe even a bit creepy, with many drunk boys trying to mop up. Please be careful and watch out for one another.

In all my years of parties, I have never been ejected for drugs or had something stolen. Here are simple steps to take:
Use a train or subway if possible, leaving your car in relatively safe neighborhoods
Use the coat check. If that is not available, try the DJ booth or a vendor friend.
Take a bike lock, metal cable, with a combination lock. Lock all of your belongings to a pole. Give the combination to your significant other. This in particular is wonderful because it works with coats and backpacks. You can even put smaller locks on the zippers, and hang it at eye level to be extra sure. I’ve done that at hardcore techno raves and nothing got taken.
Don’t leave cameras or small electronics laying around.
Take vitamins etc before you go inside.
Do not do vitamins etc in the open.
Avoid others who have drugs out, esp. M joints.
One rule I forgot, and it should be the very first:
If you go to a techno party, never ever ever let your belongings leave your sight. If you are a trance person you are especially game because (a) you are trusting and naive by nature and (b) you have more to lose b/c you are older and have had more time to compile stealable stuff, and (c) your carelessness sticks out b/c few others at the event are that green to be so careless. Garen got a videocamera stolen at Wylie’s penthouse party; there were a lot of runoffs from the Blakkat party, and if my birds are right, the recent string of emails were inspired by two people who got their coats stolen at… you guessed it, a Blakkat party. Blakkat parties, Virus renegade et al are run by great people but the problem is a lot of thugs and thieves also like the music. Consider it a karma tax for not listening to trance. Oh, it all still happens at trance parties, but only the big ones where it is hard to crack down on them in time, if not outright eject them immediately as was attempted at Limelight. People like the BTS sharpen their skills by stealing from each other. As trance people step out into the night and spill over into other vital genres, the same goes for drum and bass and two step etc. It goes a little for so-called progressive trance.

Grand Prize: Grand Theft Auto 3 for PS2 – Beat up a hooker on the street, as the ambulance comes, carjack it and run over the EMS workers. Then take their cash and zoom off. And that’s just for starters. The most addicting game I’ve played. Spent 3 days straight goofing around, had to fly back to NYC just as I was starting to kiss up to the lesbian Yakuza while getting into a car chase that lasted so long they eventually called the National Guard. Went through only half the missions Halo for Xbox – the best first-person shooter yet. Can’t wait for internet play. Get there early because after midnight it’s all trance!! yuck, we hate trance, don’t we? After midnight I’m cruising over to hear Koxbox.
i know one just went out, this is the update. It all looks good, it’s a must-go because it’s not a squat it’s new – Wylie hasn’t had time to mess it up!

Wylie’s Trance Mission Best deal in town. The cavalry came: Marco from SUN Project and Frank E from Koxbox came and DJed at the trance mission after thanks to good old Kamal, who had been playing in a jail cell in the basement of the bank at Tsunami! Wylie’s new place is rocking, very comfortable, big, and above all completely decked out in cool psy-artistry. It easily outdoes the old penthouse, and even has a beautiful roof. Don’t miss the next one. (and if yer not on safetydance, you won’t get the addy; Wylie ran out of goodwill towards nontrancers and strangers and no longer promotes at techno parties after the graffiti and Garen Topalian’s camera stealing incident) Tsunami Despite the heavy drama at the door (my companion wasn’t exactly kissing ass), and the weird security measures (no backpacks on the dance floor), Tsunami looked like it was a good party and the sound was good. I missed both acts because it just wasn’t as comfortable as Wylie’s. But it worked out because they came later and we all got to hang out.
